Converse College is an independent four-year liberal arts institution with a professional school of music. Founded in 1889, it has become one of the leading colleges for women in the South, offering a rich, extensive curriculum in the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences, and the fine arts. Through its Petrie School of Music, Converse has become a center for musical activity in the Southeast. The Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra, a nationally recognized opera workshop, and several annual musical festivals--as well as its summer operation of the Brevard Music Center--are indicative of Converse's leadership in the field of music. Converse is the first women's college in the nation and the first college in the Carolinas to be awarded All-Steinway School status. Converse is a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Petrie School of Music is a charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
